Gratte Brothers Building Services & Engineering (GBL) was appointed as Principal Contractor to deliver an M&E infrastructure upgrade to headquarter buildings and data centres across the UK. This critical services framework involves the removal and replacement of mechanical and electrical infrastructure in operational buildings which are critical to the client’s service.

Scope of Works

The work is comprised of installing packaged sub-stations, risers, generators, switch panels, building management systems (BMS), cooling towers and chillers. The M&E infrastructure upgrade framework also requires upgrades to be made to associated pipework, low-voltage (LV), medium-voltage (MV) and life safety systems across approximately 30 live buildings.

Individual projects range in value from £700,000 to £15,000,000 but each is undertaken in an environment where maintenance of services in buildings which operate 24 hours a day is a critical success factor.

Key Considerations

Over 150 local and global shutdowns have been planned in advance, the sequence of work detailed, and shifts operated to suit the programme requirements and minimise disruption to the client.

The client requires constant communication on progress and particularly requires live updates on shutdown work progress. To meet this requirement, Gratte Brothers developed an app to provide live updates, allowing the client to view progress against the programme, view photos of finished areas, health and safety statistics and receive a 2-hour update on progress during planned weekend changeover.
