Gratte Brothers Security Systems & Software was appointed by a global e-commerce retailer to install the advanced security systems required to deliver both increased physical security and loss prevention within one of their large fulfillment centres in the UK.

The Site

A site as large as this one requires a vast roll-out of security equipment, and in this instance needed to cover a total of 165 access doors, monitored fire exits and roller shutters as well as an interface to internal entrance speed lanes. Perimeter detection also includes sensors to protect the site from unauthorised individuals entering the secure area. Gratte Brothers therefore had a total of 914 cameras to install internally in order to cover all walkways, access doors, exit doors and stairwells. The design also required 325 cameras to be installed to cover strategic positions surrounding the conveyors on all four floors.

In addition to cameras, the installation included access control and intruder detection to cover all areas of this 4-storey fulfilment centre.

The Logistics

Due to the size and scale of this site, around 1,500 personnel can be working at any one time within this operational site. Therefore all deliveries and plant were required to be booked in on an online portal managed by the general contractor. Gratte Brothers was therefore selective with couriers and delivery methods to ensure the equipment arrived at appropriate times and the risk of equipment going missing was minimised.

A number of design changes were made during installation, therefore Gratte Brothers was required to be flexible and adapt to meet the client’s requirements at every step and also liaise with the client. The size and scale of this project within a singular building makes this project one of the largest Gratte Brothers has undertaken in the retail sector and the vital learnings have been directly applied to 2 further projects that are currently running and will ultimately help guide numerous projects in the future.
